About insects as food and protein sources 🐛
What kind of insects are used in Petgood's pet food and other products?
Our products for dogs and cats contain the larvae of the black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens). This specific insect is chosen for its high protein content, rich essential amino acids, and easily digestible nutrients. Alongside protein, the insect species contains healthy fatty acids like omega-3 and omega-6, plus essential minerals like magnesium and iron. The black soldier fly is EU-approved as pet food. Check our website for more on our insects.
Where is the insect farm located?
The insect farm we, Petgood, collaborate with is Europe's leading insect farm, which is located in the Netherlands. The insect farm is called Protix, and they, like us, specialise in the black soldier fly, exclusively working with this insect species. Feel free to visit Protix's website to learn more about their fantastic work.
What do the insects eat?
Our insects feed on high-quality plant-based byproducts—a mix of grain, fruit, and vegetable remnants from local producers. For instance, potato skins from a french fry manufacturer. This approach utilizes existing resources, reducing food waste!
Do I need to supplement your pet food for it to be complete?
All our food is complete, containing all the necessary nutrients for dogs and cats as per FEDIAF guidelines. FEDIAF compiles nutritional recommendations for pets based on the latest scientific research, updating regularly. As such, there is no need for additional supplements, if your dog or cat don't have any special needs according to their health status.
Does your food contain chitin? Is chitin harmful to dogs and cats?
Chitin is a fiber found in insect and crustacean shells, like shrimp and crabs, and in common foods like mushrooms and yeast. Our larval-based food has low chitin content as the larvae have no shells.
There's no evidence that chitin in food is harmful or toxic to pets or humans. Food authorities haven't advised limiting chitin-containing foods. The black soldier fly larvae is EU-approved for consumption by both humans and pets after EFSA deems it safe.
Can mammals, like dogs and cats, digest insect protein?
Numerous mammals consume insects - bears, wolves, foxes, and wildcats, among others. Wildcats, ancestors of domestic cats, include insects in their diet. Studies confirm high digestibility (85-90%) of Petgoods' insect protein, considered high digestibility (over 80%). Each batch undergoes rigorous protein and nutritional checks. Visit Petgoods' site for more on protein quality and digestibility research.
Do insects contain parasites?
No. Parasites or disease outbreaks have never occurred during black soldier fly larval farming. Our food or insects contain no parasites.
The black soldier fly isn't considered invasive or a disease carrier. It's resilient to diseases without requiring antibiotics, unlike traditional protein sources. Our insect farm, Protix, certified with GMP+ (Good Manufacturing Practice), ensures strict manufacturing principles, testing feed for pathogens. Insects live in a controlled environment, and all incoming materials (like feed) undergo contamination tests (heavy metals, toxins, biological agents) before contact. Each batch of insect meal and food undergoes nutritional and food hygiene tests before use.
Why is insect protein more sustainable?
Insects are more sustainable than traditional animal proteins. They're more resource-efficient, using less land, water, and feed and causing lower greenhouse gas emissions. Our insects consume plant-based byproducts and waste, reducing food waste and transforming it into protein. Explore more on the advantages of insects for our planet on our website.
